Tim Lyden is a Partner in, and Co-Chair of, the Intellectual Property (IP) Practice Group. A trusted advisor who’s focused on clients’ objectives, Tim provides commercially practical advice on branding and other IP rights.
Tim represents clients in diverse industries – including life sciences, education, financial services, media, foodservice, luxury goods, and automotive, among others – on issues relating to brands and related IP, including the selection, protection, and enforcement of trademarks, and the protection and enforcement of copyright and domain name rights.
From advising an individual on filing strategy for a single application to advising a multinational company on acquisition of rights in 150 jurisdictions, Tim helps clients acquire, protect, develop, and commercialize their IP assets. He develops and implements branding strategies, and protects brands through clearance, acquisition, registering, and monetizing rights. He also works with clients to enforce their brands against third parties, achieving commercial resolutions outside the litigation context when it meets clients’ objectives. He also appears before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in opposition and cancellation matters, as well as before domain name arbitration panels to enforce trademark and other rights in domain names.
Tim also works with clients to protect their other intellectual property rights through copyright and other IP mechanisms available to do so. In addition, Tim conducts due diligence on intellectual property assets and advises clients on IP issues in strategic transactions.
Serving currently as chair of the Geopolitical Issues Subcommittee of the Emerging Issues Committee, Tim is an active member of the International Trademark Association, as well as of the Virginia and DC Bars. Among other accolades, over each of the last five years Tim has been named an IP STAR by ManagingIP.
Prior to joining VLP, Tim co-led the U.S. trademark prosecution practice as a Partner with Hogan Lovells. Tim received his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law, and his undergraduate degree from The College of William & Mary.
In recent years, Tim has become an avid pickleball player.
