Jim White is a partner in VLP’s Intellectual Property Practice, with over 25 years of experience in patent procurement. His practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications directed to various AI-related inventions, including using neural networks and other machine learning models, as well as a wide variety of other computer-related areas.

Prior to becoming a software patent attorney, Jim worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over six years on AI-related development projects. His technical degrees are from Stanford University, and include an M.S. in Computer Science, and a B.S. in Symbolic Systems with an emphasis in Artificial Intelligence (and with the first 2 years spent in the Electrical Engineering curriculum). He received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall), where he was appointed to the Order of the Coif and served as an Executive Editor of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. Jim has prepared and filed hundreds of software-related patent applications, including for clients such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Zillow, Valve Corp., Siebel, EveryPoint, Cray Computers, Inrix, etc.

Jim has received various honors for his work as a patent attorney, including the following:
